The patient's temperature fell to 36'C in the first 20 hours but then fluctuated up to 38'C for five days. Further doses of quinine every 12 hours (maximum 12-2 mg/kg daily) steadily reduced the parasitaemia to zero in six days. The therapeutic concentration of plasma quinine ranged between 10-3 and 25-6 mmol/l (3 and 8 isg/ml).
